Earth Day 2025: From Awareness to Everyday Action

Today is Earth Day—a moment to pause, reflect, and recommit to the planet we all share. But we know that meaningful change doesn’t happen in a single day. It happens in the choices we make every day, both individually and as a business.

Climate change is no longer a distant threat. January 2025 was officially the warmest January on record, with a global average temperature of 13.23°C—nearly a full degree higher than the long-term average. These changes are real, and they’re happening all around us.

Some facts are hard to ignore:

  • A single plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to decompose.
  • Cigarette butts, the most littered item in the world, contain a filter that is  98% plastic fibers.
  • If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases (following China and the United States).
  • And methane, released by waste, is 25 times more potent than CO₂ over a century.

Clearly, tackling climate change means more than just tracking carbon. It calls for a broader, more integrated view of sustainability — one that recognises the relationship between our environment, our health, and the future of work.

That’s why environmental sustainability is a key focus in our ESG programme. A degraded environment—whether it’s poor air quality, pollution, or disappearing green space—has a direct impact on employee well-being. We’re committed to increasing awareness of both our personal and collective impact and creating accessible ways for our team to get involved. From online learning to sharing simple habits at home, each small step contributes to a larger shift.

We’re also paying attention to how environmental sustainability and mental well-being are deeply connected. What is the future of our business if our team are stressed or dissatisfied?  Studies have shown that exposure to green spaces, such as our local parks, beaches, forests, or even indoor plants, can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting mood and focus. Healthy trees and plants help improve air quality inside and outside, helping to prevent health issues before they occur. That’s why we’ve embedded biodiversity into our carbon offset strategy, planting trees near where our teams live to support the planet and the people caring for it.

Looking ahead, we’re continuing to explore new ways to incorporate sustainability into our everyday decisions—from how we use technology to how we connect with local communities. Some of our team are already choosing laptops based on sustainability criteria, while others are championing grassroots efforts in their neighborhoods. This is where change begins—with curiosity, collaboration, and care.

As we reflect on Earth Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to integrating sustainability into everything we do—from daily operations to long-term strategy. But this is just the beginning. Our future lies in building stronger partnerships, deepening employee engagement, and embracing innovation that drives real environmental impact. Together, we will continue to learn, adapt, and act—creating not only a more sustainable business but a more resilient world for generations to come.
